Humanitarian decision-makers will be better equipped to meet the needs of a fast-evolving sector, thanks to a new foresight study by the Centre for Humanitarian Leadership and the Interagency Research and Analysis Network (IARAN).
The project will update – and expand upon – the original Future of Aid: INGOs in 2030 study, conducted in 2016 by IARAN. It will contain a new set of scenarios and a detailed analysis of how organisations can lead themselves on a journey of transformation.
The primary objective of the Future of Aid 2040 study is to provide all humanitarian actors navigating the humanitarian ecosystem with outlooks for 2040 to support their strategic decision-making and pursuit of systems transformation.
Project Lead and CHL Deputy Director Josh Hallwright says the updated study will have a greater focus on the increased opportunities and risks of digitalisation, the everyday impacts of climate change and the push for decolonisation of the aid sector.
We’re excited to partner with IARAN to deliver the Future of Aid 2040 project and to play a vital role in shaping an inclusive and strategic outlook on the humanitarian sector.”
“CHL is keen to involve as many of our networks as possible to ensure diverse voices are captured.”
IARAN Project Lead and Director Michel Maietta says now is the right time to begin a new outlook to reflect changes in the global environment and within the humanitarian sector.
“We have received multiple requests from colleagues across different organisations who would like analysis to support them to continue to be effective in a changing environment,” Michel says.
“Key to this study will be reflecting the diversity of the actors involved in the humanitarian ecosystem – understanding that local communities and crisis affected people are at the centre of every response is imperative.”
CHL and IARAN will shortly commence a series of webinars in English, French, Spanish and Arabic, with the view to gather input from a wide range of individuals working in the sector.
The Future of Aid 2040 study is overseen by an Executive Committee and a wider Steering Committee. View the make-up of both committees on the Future of Aid 2040 website.

Future of Aid 2030 Background
The Future of Aid: INGOs in 2030, released in 2016, was a widely read, and most importantly, widely used report. This study became a reference for humanitarian actors throughout the system and has been used to support the strategic planning of over a dozen organisations. The Future of Aid: INGOs in 2030 report demonstrated the value of exploring and analysing the trends and uncertainties facing the humanitarian ecosystem and, as the excerpt below shows, described a future which reflects many of the dynamics defining the global landscape today.
