As told by Bevita Meidityawati.
Receiving the Women in Humanitarian Action Scholarship to undertake the Graduate Certificate of Humanitarian Leadership (formerly the Humanitarian Leadership Program [HLP]) has been a life-changing opportunity. For 9 months, Deakin University has supported me in building my leadership behaviors, and becoming part of the next generation of humanitarian leaders.
What I learnt from the Graduate Certificate of Humanitarian Leadership
Reflecting on my journey throughout the Graduate Certificate of Humanitarian Leadership, it has enabled me to build my leadership behaviours and effectively apply them in practice. It was amazing to have such supportive lecturers, coaches, and fellow course participants that guided me in identifying my vulnerabilities, and taking action to overcome them. I particularly enjoyed the simulation exercises, where the lecturers, coaches, and simulation facilitators were so helpful and committed towards supporting students in achieving our learning objectives. Through both theory and simulation, I have learned to place the humanitarian imperative at the core of my strategic thinking.

Life after the Graduate Certificate of Humanitarian Leadership
I am currently the Programme Lead for COVID-19 Pandemic Emergency Response at World Vision, where I can make informed decisions in humanitarian contexts based on context analysis and the needs of vulnerable people. I am confident in leading field offices, designing emergency response programming, and emphasising the importance of working with local partners. I have also learnt to build high performing teams, and to utilize my strengths to support my team in delivering the best results.
This journey won’t end. The GCHL gave me the opportunity to connect with amazing people and colleagues in the humanitarian industry. Now that I have graduated, I aspire to continue building my leadership behaviours, and display strong humanitarian leadership.
