We have now closed our call for abstracts for the 2019 Asia Pacific Humanitarian Leadership Conference.
Thank you to everyone who made a submission.
The Conference reflects the hybrid nature of the Centre – the combination of humanitarian practice with academic rigour. We invite abstracts which address the conference themes in the Asia Pacific region, however we will also consider abstracts which look beyond the region.
Presenters are encouraged to critically reflect on their topic or presentation, rather than just promoting their own work, or the work of their organisation. We would like to see presenters challenge their own thinking, as well as challenging others.

The 2019 Conference theme is Humanitarian Leadership and the Future of Humanitarian Action.
Sub-Themes
Humanitarian leadership in a shifting system:
- Building humanitarian leadership capability (generational change/leadership pipeline/supporting growth/humanitarian leadership education);
- Health and other thematic areas in conflict and fragile settings;
- Local leadership in humanitarian settings;
- Ethics and values in leadership practice;
- Racism, sexism, elitism and abuse of power in humanitarian settings;
- Women, leadership and diversity;
- Organisation identity and change management in the humanitarian system;
- Leadership and urbanisation.
Future of Humanitarian Action:
- Humanitarian action in the face of climate change;
- Role of regional institutions in preventing and responding to humanitarian crises;
- Emerging health and other thematic challenges in humanitarian crises;

Climate Change and Leadership:
- Humanitarian action and leadership in the face of climate change;
- Climate change and health;
- Programmatic challenges and approaches in the face of climate change;
- Women, leadership and diversity in response to climate change;
- Humanitarianism and extractive industries;
- Securitisation of health and the implications for humanitarian action;
- Organisational responses to reducing the climate impact of humanitarian action.
Localisation:
- Three years on: World Humanitarian Summit and Localisation;
- Localisation in Action;
- Localisation and Inclusion;
- Sovereignty, localisation and the international system;
- Disaster governance and localisation;
- Localisation in conflict settings;
- Women, Leadership and Diversity.
Guide for authors
Potential presenters are required to submit:
- An abstract no longer than 300 words by 24 February 2019.
- A title for the session (topic area, theme AND title)
- Author bio (up to 150 words), hi-res headshot (min. 300 dpi).

Important Dates
Deadline for submission: Closed
Notification of acceptance to authors: Mid-March 2019
Final conference registration for all presenters: 10 April 2019
Authors are not required to submit a paper either prior to or after the conference. If you would like your paper to be considered for publication in the Centre’s forthcoming Working Paper Series, please submit your 5000 word paper to matthew.clarke@deakin.edu.au.
Terms and conditions
If accepted, submitters agree that at least one author will register prior to 10 April, and will present the accepted work at the 2019 Conference in Melbourne, Australia.
Submission of an abstract implies the author’s agreement to publish the abstract in Conference publications including the Centre’s website.
