Application form

  • To complete your application, you will need to provide a variety of documents, personal details, and some purpose-written materials. If you have all requirements completed and ready to upload, the application process will be much quicker.

    Fees are determined based on your geographical location as a student, and the type of organisation you work in. The fee structures are designed to support students from developing nations.

    Funding

    As part of the application, you will be required to nominate whether you are self-funding, or whether you intend to receive employer support or sponsorship to cover course fees. If you intend to receive sponsored funding from your employer, you will need to provide written statements from members of your organisation, including detailed recommendations from your Line Manager and Country/Department Director. These will be recorded in the Employee Support and Funding Agreement (available below).

    Please note you will be required to provide:

    Passport

    A scanned colour copy of your passport identification page. Please ensure you have a valid passport that will remain in effect for at least six months after the date of your arrival at the last overseas residential unit.

    Resume

    Attach your resume, at a maximum length of three pages.

    Written responses

    Craft detailed written responses—up to 300 words each—to five key questions relating to your personal goals and leadership objectives. This is completed as part of the GCHL Personal Statement and Declaration Form (available below).

    Written employer references

    Source and provide detailed written references from your employer, including recommendations from your Line Manager and Country or Department Director.

    Applicants may be requested to undertake a written test or undergo an interview during the application process if there are concerns about your English language proficiency. Students must have the equivalent English language level of an IELTS 6.5 as per University requirements.

  • I understand that I am responsible for ensuring payment of all fees and charges associated with this programme and that the course fees cover:

    • Tuition fees.
    • Access to distance learning materials and e-learning platform.
    • Teaching and assessment.
    • Coaching and mentoring (for the duration of the course and only in the intensive units).
    • A Graduate Certificate in Humanitarian Leadership (on successful completion).
  • Step 8Scholarships

  • The Women in Humanitarian Action Scholarship is available for students enrolled in the Graduate Certificate of Humanitarian Leadership. The scholarships have been established as part of the IKEA Foundation’s investment in the Centre for Humanitarian Leadership’s initiative to support access to ongoing education for women.

    The Women in Humanitarian Action Scholarship provides successful applicants with a contribution of between 50–100 percent of their course and university amenities fees for the Graduate Certificate of Humanitarian Leadership. Preference will be given to citizens from countries below 0.85 on the Human Development Index of the United Nations Development Program and applicants offered a Tier 1 place (see course fees). Scholarships will be awarded for AHL701 and AHL702 or AHL703 and AHL704 or for all four units.

    To be eligible you must:

    • Be a female applicant for the A540 Graduate Certificate of Humanitarian Leadership
    • Committed to enrol in two units in consecutive study periods to achieve course completion
    • Provide an introductory statement about your goals for study and what it means to receive the scholarship.

    Special Conditions: Students must successfully complete each enrolled credit point to remain eligible for the scholarship – AHL701, AHL702, AHL703 and AHL704. Students must enrol in, and remain enrolled in, all four units to remain eligible for the scholarship. If a student defers their enrolment they will lose the ongoing scholarship but can re-apply for the scholarship again on re-commencement.

    Complete an impact statement either during the duration of the scholarship or on completion of the Course.

  • Student Confidentiality Agreement and Code of Conduct Declaration

    Demonstrating integrity and respect for others is a fundamental component of the Humanitarian Leadership Programme / Graduate Certificate of Humanitarian Leadership curriculum.

    Students are expected to be familiar with and adhere to the Deakin University Student Code of Conduct.

    In addition, students are expected to conduct themselves in a manner that demonstrates personal and professional integrity and respect for staff, other students and the future of the course.

    1. Integrity and appropriate behaviour

    1.1 Students must be honest, fair and trustworthy in their interactions with faculty and staff of the Humanitarian Leadership Programme / Graduate Certificate of Humanitarian Leadership, its partners and with other students. This includes accurately representing interactions with other students, providing meaningful and constructive feedback, and acknowledging the value of ideas and opinions of others.

    1.2 Students must show respect in their interactions with faculty and staff of the Humanitarian Leadership Programme / Graduate Certificate of Humanitarian Leadership, its partners and with other students, irrespective of gender, age, culture, ethnicity, social and economic status, sexual preferences and beliefs.

    1.3 Students must use appropriate language in all verbal and written communication, including online communication. They must not communicate in a manner that is aggressive, hostile, derogatory or demeaning toward other students or staff.

    1.4 Behaviour in teaching and learning activities should not disrupt the learning opportunities of other students.


    2 Respect the privacy of other students and staff

    2.1 The Humanitarian Leadership Programme / Graduate Certificate of Humanitarian Leadership, encourages students and faculty to reflect on and share their professional experiences. Students are expected to contribute to all group learning activities in a manner consistent with the self- directed learning and collaborative learning principles which underpin the Deakin curriculum.

    2.2 Within the learning environment, other students may trust you with personal and private information that they would not otherwise divulge. Some of this may relate to situations they have faced in their workplace and which could potentially damage the reputation of the student or their past or present employer.

    2.3 Any personal or professional information disclosed throughout the course is to be treated with sensitivity and respect. It is a breach of confidentiality to discuss the details of such information outside the confines of the online simulation units or the course, or to use such information in a way which could damage the reputation or career of another student.

    2.4 Any significant breach of this instruction will attract disciplinary action and possible exclusion from the course.


    3 Course Structure and Content

    3.1 You are encouraged to discuss your general experiences on the Humanitarian Leadership Programme / Graduate Certificate of Humanitarian Leadership with external audiences (for example,colleagues, supervisors, friends). Discussions such as these are beneficial to the course and have contributed to the strength of its reputation. Many graduates are strong advocates for the course, and encourage their own team members and colleagues to apply.

    3.2 However, the Humanitarian Leadership Programme / Graduate Certificate of Humanitarian Leadership includes practical learning activities such as exercises and simulations which offer greater opportunity for learning if the details of the exercise are not known to the student in advance.

    3.3 We ask that you do not disclose detailed information regarding the unit timetables, the narrative of any scenarios or simulation exercises, and the details of any assessments in the units.

    3.4 Particular care should be taken when discussing the course with potential future students, or in professional settings where staff members of humanitarian agencies are gathered. This may have a negative impact on the learning experience of future students, and may damage or compromise the integrity of the course.

  • Privacy and Data Protection

    Deakin University collects your personal information from you directly by way of this application form and will collect your personal information from your employer and/or your nominated referees, as noted above.

    This information will primarily be used to assess your eligibility for admission into Deakin and selection into the Graduate Certificate in Humanitarian Leadership course. If your application is successful, your information will be used to offer you a place on a course and to administer your acceptance or refusal of that place.

    You should also expect Deakin to use your personal information to:

    • provide you with additional information related to your application for admission (e.g. about fees, scholarships, course requirements)
    • offer you advice and access to student services prior to your enrolment
    • determine your eligibility for scholarships, bursaries or similar awards
    • give you information on additional opportunities for studying at Deakin
    • help Deakin with marketing and fundraising initiatives
    • conduct planning and quality assessment activities
    • invite you to participate in surveys or research.

    As part of the selection process, Deakin will disclose your personal information to the extent necessary to verify your qualifications or experience.

    On admission into Deakin, the personal information collected in the application process will form part of your student record and will be managed in accordance with Deakin's Information Privacy Statement for Students located at https://www.deakin.edu.au/students/enrolment-fees-and-money/enrolments/student-information-privacy. Please note that your academic results and performance will only be provided to you, and will not be disclosed to your employer, even if they are providing you with a scholarship, without your consent.

  • Collection Statement

  • Additional Information for Applicants located in the EU

    Deakin University manages personal information under the authority of the Deakin University Act 2009 (Vic). Withdrawing consent: if Deakin processes your personal information based solely on your consent, you may withdraw that consent, however Deakin may not be able to continue to provide you with certain goods or services.   • Final Declaration

    I have obtained Line Manager and Director approval to participate in this course (if applicable).

    I understand that aspects of the programme may be psychologically demanding, and I am prepared to be personally challenged.

    Parts of this course involve online simulated exercises similar that of a first phase humanitarian response and I understand that this may be uncomfortable, create a stressful environment, and that I may be out of contact with family, friends and my employer for periods of time during the online simulation units.

    I understand that this is a University level programme that will require a MINIMUM of 10 hours of study per week for units AHL701 and AHL703.

    I commit to engage with the learning programme including attending, in full, all mandatory distance learning activities.

    I acknowledge that I am only eligible for IKEA Foundation Grant Support for one attempt at course completion.
