Massive Open Online Course – Humanitarian Responses to 21st Century Disasters
This Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) is a free, 12-week course open to the general public and anyone interested in understanding more about the humanitarian sector.
The MOOC introduces participants to the history of humanitarianism and humanitarian assistance, and the actors and the systems in which responses to natural and human-induced disasters such as conflict take place. It explores the complexities of working in the global humanitarian field and examines the ethical challenges of disaster and emergency response.
The course includes an online simulation in Lolesia, a fictional country suffering from economic stagnation and oppressive rule. The simulation actively tests participants’ humanitarian response strategies.
Course participants learn from expert commentary and interviews with humanitarian practitioners and academics from around the globe. Participants are encouraged to network online, and to challenge and question each other’s ideas.
